Registration Categories

This is a list of all categories under the NZSL teacher registration system.

Qualified NZSL Teacher

  • Current NZSLTA member.
  • Completed 'Certificate in Deaf Studies: Teaching NZSL' qualification or equivalent.
  • Achieved over 200 NZSL teaching hours in community education (e.g. NZSL classes).

TeachSign access:

  • Can access all resources.

Provisional NZSL Teacher

  • Current NZSLTA member.
  • Partially completed 'Certificate in Deaf Studies: Teaching NZSL' qualification (including teaching practicum paper - DEAF806) or equivalent.
  • Achieved between 90 - 200 NZSL teaching hours in community education (e.g. NZSL classes).

TeachSign access:

  • Can access all resources but not NZSL level 2.

Trainee NZSL Teacher

  • Current NZSLTA member.
  • Recommended by two qualified NZSL tutors (they must be registered with RAP).
  • Show willingness / commitment to NZSL teaching related professional development e.g. Deaf Studies.
  • Can only teach up to 30 hours (e.g. 1A & 1B, Beginners 1 courses).

TeachSign access:

  • Can access only NZSL level one (units 1-5) and NZSL for families (units 1-5) resources.

Non-Certified Tutor/Supporting Member

  • Current NZSLTA member.
  • Not part of the RAP registration system.
  • Want to support NZSLTA.
  • If you are teaching, a NZSL tutor must be fluent in NZSL, knows NZSL grammar correctly and understand Deaf culture and must be interacted with Deaf community.
  • If interested, can apply for Trainee NZSL Tutor (under RAP).

TeachSign access:

  • Can only access NZSL level 1 (units 1-3) and NZSL for Families (units 1-2) resources.
