Staying Registered
How do I stay registered?
You need a minimum of five hours of giving or attending professional development per year (or 10 hours within two years), subject to approval by the Registration Advisory Panel (RAP). Five hours is approximately one full day, 10 hours approximately two full days of professional development.
This system encourages NZSL teachers to do professional development to continually improve their teaching.
What kind of professional development?
You can reach your hours by attending the biennial NZSLTA conference, and workshops. Other professional development workshops and/or training not provided or administrated by NZSLTA are subject to approval by the RAP. Any workshops on teaching Deaf children are not applicable. Other professional development includes the following:
- Overseas sign language workshops/courses
- Community education courses
- Tertiary education related to language teaching
- Local workshops by educational institutions
Topics and/or courses should include the following areas:
- Class management
- Deaf culture
- Curriculum development
- Course evaluation
- Issues related to NZSL/Language/Culture teaching
- NZSL grammar
- Professionalism
- Second language teaching
- Teaching resources and materials
- Teaching methodology
- NZSL assessment
- Sign language development relevant to sign language teaching
If you are not sure about a topic and/or course, please contact RAP. Keep records of all professional development(s) attended, e.g. certificate, letter.
If you have done at least 10 hours of professional development within two years, your registry status remains current.
